Tommy Gun’s Garage

Everytime I think back to my experience at Tommy Gun’s all I can do is shake my head and laugh.  In all honesty, I had no idea what to expect.  The website mentions something about the roaring twenties, gangsters, and flappers.  With that said, here is how it started…we get out of the cab, look around and start to wonder, umm are we at the right place?  There isn’t any signage, so make sure you have access to the address number.  We walked up to the door (which we hoped was right), knocked, and were asked the secret password.  Thank god we remembered (“Little Jake Sent Us”)…Well that is how it started.  Once inside, the atmosphere was great.  You can’t get any better than an outgoing wait staff who offers non stop entertainment.  They were always willing to go that extra mile to make sure we had everything we needed.  It was really impressive was that while they served us, the waiters and waitresses were also the actual performers….hats off to them.  As far as the food, well, I hate being harsh, but I have to honest, it wasn’t that great.  I wasn’t terrible by any means, but it wasn’t worth the bill of over $100.00 we paid at the end of the night.  For the after dinner performance, it was quite comical.  The host was awesome.  I would not recommend this for actual Chicagoans, but for tourists looking for a good laugh and something fun and different to do, swing on by.

Silver Spoon

This little Thai restaurant is located in the River North neighborhood.  It is possible to walk past this place several times and not even realize to walk in because it is located in basement of the building…which i’ll admit, does seem alittle shady.  However, to pass on the Silver Spoon would be a shame.  My friends and I had frequented this restaurant many times because they have a great lunch special.  The food is light, tasty, and fresh.  The atmosphere is casual.  It is always hard to find great affordable restaurants in the River North area, but this place fits the bill.  Overall, I give Silver Spoon two thumbs up!

Vivere

If you are not receiving medicare, steer clear of this place…seriously.  Vivere is an italian restaurant located in the heart of the theater district of Chicago.  Vivere is one of three restaurants located inside the Italian Village.  It is also the most expensive of the three as well. The decor was traditional and romantic.  The wine list was exceptional however unless you wanted to have minor debt issues, most of the wines were untouchable.  The wait staff was a bit pretentious.  Although, I have to admit the food was great.  We chose this place because it was right down the block from the Bank of America theater where we were seeing Jersey Boys. (Alittle plug for the Boys, I would most certainly encourage anyone and everyone to see them.  I was humming the songs for days.)  Had I known the theater district alittle better, I would have avoided Vivere at all costs.

Tank Noodle – Pho Xe Tang

For anyone looking to try something new to step outside of your food comfort zone, try this place.  The food is authentic Vietnamese.  Tank Noodle is located in North Chicago in the Uptown/Edgewater neighborhood at the corner of Broadway and Argyle.

I’m not going to lie, the menu is a bit overwhelming, especially seeing all the different choices that I wouldn’t normally expect to see on a menu.  I would suggest taking your time and read over the menu or else you might get something like cow intestines, oh yes that is a possibility.   The table turnover is relatively quick so wait time is minimal.  The prices are all typically under $10.00.  The atmosphere is very informal, nothing fancy.  There were alot of children present, so very family friendly.  The wait staff was always incredibly prompt, sometimes maybe a little annoying.  So overall, give this place a try.  I don’t think you will regret it.  Go in with an open mind and the willingness to try something new, you just might be surprised.  I know I was!
